Zurrieq Futsal Club

Impossible Is Nothing!!!

The History of Zurrieq Futsal Club......

It all goes back to the Hokuto Lions.  In 1998, a group of friends, at the time playing with Zurrieq FC, started participating in 5-a-side football tournaments.  A lot of these players, form the now established Zurrieq FC Futsal team.

In a few days, Hokuto Lions established itself as one of the main 5-a-side football teams in Zurrieq.  By participating in various tournaments, the lions managed to finish runners-up in the Zurrieq Wolves tournament (1998).

1999 was the peak year for Hokuto Lions.  Various tournaments were won such as Zurrieq Wolves tournament and Sezzjoni Zaghzagh Karmelitani tournament.  Also in that year a 3rd place in the much prestigous 55hr Zurrieq football marathon organized by CRZ was achieved.  1999 was also the year where Hokuto Lions won the Zurrieq FC Summer League knock out.  This was done by beating the eternal rivals Xarolla United.  The team managed to finish runner-up in the same league.

After a lot of training and hard work, in the millenium year 2000 the Hokuto Lions managed to win the 55hr football marathon without losing a single game.  This record was never ever achieved by any other team.

In 2002, Hokuto Lions changed its name to Zurrieq FC Futsal and started the adventure in the MFA Futsal League by competing in the 3rd division.  The main objective for the team was the promotion to the 2nd division and this was achieved in the same year.  Zurrieq FC Futsal managed to finish up as section winner and 3rd division runners-up behind Hibernians FC.

In 2003, Zurrieq FC Futsal consolidated its position and established itself as one of the main teams in the 2nd division.

In 2004, Zurrieq FC Futsal ended up as 2nd division champions by dominating Section B and beating Konica Minolta Gunners FC in the championship decider.

In 2005-2006, Zurrieq Futsal Club fought very hard throughout the season and consolidated its position in the MFA Futsal League First Division whilst establishing itself as one of the main teams to participate in the same division for the next year.

Season 2006-07, started with two players within Zurrieq Futsal Club (Roderick Caruana and Tyron Borg) to be called for the first Malta Futsal National Team.

Both players participated during the three matches of the preliminary round of the EUFA Futsal Championship against Cyprus, Kazakastan and Georgia. During the season they participated in a Tournament in Sicily. Furthermore, goalkeeper Ian Farrugia earned a call up from Maltese national coach Michal Striz. Zurrieq Futsal Club started the season with great optimism having won and draw the first games. Two games to go for the end of the first round, they occupied the first place of the Division but a loss in concentration and misfortune they began to loose games in the last minutes. Such results ended up badly for Zurrieq Futsal Club having ended the season in the last place of the division. Unfortunately Season 2007-08 will see Zurrieq FC in the second division for their second time since.

During Season 2007-08, Zurrieq FC made all efforts to win the promotion again to the First Division. Although an impressive start in the first matches was visible, after some unfortunate and serious injuries, lack in continuity was seen throughout the remaining matches. Fighting till the last match for grapping the promotion but it all ended up in the third place leaving Zurrieq FC for the second consecutive season in the MFA Futsal Leadue Second Division.

As part of their preparation during the pre-season for the next season, Zurrieq FC made their debut in international futsal first with playing against KF Tirana (Albania) at the Corradino Pavilion loosing 8 - 4. Afterwards in the beginning of September 2008, Zurrieq FC partipated in an International Futsal Tournament in Portugal playing against Fontainhas FC, AA U Algarve, and Padernese FC (all Futsal squads from Portugal).
